Flucal® is a fluidised milled quicklime which has been specially created for use in ladle injection

In Europe, the hot metal desulphurisation (HMD) process has traditionally used an injection of either calcium carbide or a calcium carbide-magnesium mix. A recent development is to inject a mixture of quicklime and magnesium into the hot metal. Lhoist has developed fluidised milled quicklimes (Flucal®, Wülfraflux®) which can be used:

• in co-injection with magnesium powder.
• in mono-injection, as lime-magnesium blend (Flucal®-M),
processed in our dedicated mixing plant.

Advantages

• the slag volume is reduced.
• the iron losses can be halved, thanks to the lower   viscosity of the slag.
• the cost of using milled lime is far lower than that of other reagents.
• Flucal®, as well as the resulting slag, is safe to handle and to store.
• the lime slag can be recycled.

Desulphurising with a lime-magnesium mix is therefore highly cost-effective.

Technical Support

In order to develop this new technology rapidly, we have set up a joint venture with an external partner, leader in injection techniques and manufacturer of injection equipment. The combined experience of both companies allows us to provide you with technical assistance and follow-up during trials and start-up, data analyses and continuous R&D support, to improve our products' quality and performance.
