April 2001 Lhoist in Belgium chooses environmentally friendly rock transport
Since the liberalisation of river transport
in Belgium, the Lhoist Group has switched the transport of 600,000 tons
of crushed stones between its plants from road trucks to river boats.
This means that about 20,000 lorry return trips can be avoided, much
to the satisfaction of those inhabitants whose cities were formerly on
the routes taken by these lorries.
Lhoist promises that the switch to river transport (including loading and
unloading) will not affect the final prices of lime products. « "It is our
contribution for a better environment", said a Lhoist spokesperson ». |
