The quality of limestone found in any deposit depends on how it evolved over time and its surrounding environment. This influences the amount of non-carbonate minerals (impurities like clay, quartz sand, etc.) in the sediment. When limestone reaches the Earth’s surface, it may comprise impurities transported by infiltrated rainwater. Earthquakes and other natural phenomena can lead to the development of fractures in the rock allowing deleterious minerals to enter and stay forever.
Layers of rock comprising extremely different qualities of limestone can be found in a single quarry, lateral variations may also occur.
Lhoist uses a wide range of rocks found in our deposits. We have developed many different processes to create value-adding solutions that benefit a large panel of applications, thus making the best utilization of natural resources for the preservation of the environment.
