Agriculture & Forestry

Lime, limestone, dolomite and other minerals are used in agriculture and forestry, both to correct soil acidity and to add nutrients that contain magnesium and calcium. These nutrients are essential for healthy plant growth and to increase crop yield. This allows you to better utilize acreage and reduce the impact of intensive agriculture (fertilizers) on the environment, e.g. pollution of ground water.

Oxyfertil® and Foliostim® are global Lhoist brands for calcined fertilization products and foliar fertilizers.  www.oxyfertil.com

Fertilization

Soil fertility is primarily related to the combination of minerals and organic components, along with the right structure for optimum air and water exchange. You can ensure rational soil amendment using calcium and magnesium to improve the soil's physical structure. This results in a better chemical balance and boosts the soil's biology. By controlling topsoil acidity through use of the strong base that our products contain, you can also facilitate better plant uptake of fertilizing compounds.

In forestry, dolomite-based products stimulate photosynthesis. By lowering the degree of acidity in the soil, they also ensure better assimilation of nutrients, resulting in a significant increase in forest productivity.

Our Foliostim® range of foliar fertilizers has specific application in cases where plant growth is limited due to the reduced usage of soil fertilizers. Sprayed on crop leaves, Foliostim® stimulates growth by directly supplying specific soluble nutrients. By saving fertilizer and encreasing crop yields, it plays a significant role in sustainable agriculture.

Ongoing field trials and other forms of collaboration between Lhoist scientists and university researchers are resulting in the continual development of new types of agri-forestry products.

Plant protection

Hydrated lime blended with copper and/or zinc is sprayed as a ‘white wash’ on citrus plants. Commonly known as “Bordeaux Mixture” by wine producers, it also protects grapes against fungal diseases.
