Creating a new wetland ecosystem

Spinks Clay, Tennessee, USA

A flourishing wetland

Our Spinks Clay site in the United Stated has led a successful transformation project of dry land into a flourishing wetland ecosystem that is now home to many of the 600 indigenous wildlife species found in western Tennessee. Lhoist also manages there over 4,000 acres of mixed species timberland which provides an optimal wildlife habitat to local species.

This project was awarded a Lhoist Sustainability Award in 2019.

This project at our Spinks Clay plant in the United Stated has three components, each fostering sustainability through environmental stewardship.

Wetland with blue sky

Aquatic habitat regeneration

In 2 years, over 15 acres of dry bottomland has been transformed into a flourishing wetland ecosystem that is now home to many of the 600 indigenous wildlife species found in western Tennessee.

Forest regeneration

Lhoist manages over 4,000 acres of timberland in Spinks Clay. They changed from planting fast-growing softwoods to a mixed-species forest to provide an optimal wildlife habitat and a sustainable harvest on the long term. It contributes to CO2 abatement and erosion prevention. It also fosters wildlife proliferation, while at the same time generating a modest annual profit.

Two hands with soil

Soil regeneration, engineering & sod production

We seek to provide a leadership role in enhancing the health of our soils by various sub-projects.
